Sewing Project #1

I am extremely proud to say that this weekend I completed my first sewing project.... with a lot of help from my mom but I was learning after all. I loved making it and hope to keep sewing and become more independent and confident in my sewing skills. I picked a good place to start though... I got an "easy to sew" pattern, as seen below. But as I learned while deciphering the instructions and sewing, it must have been easy to a sewing pro, because it was NOT THAT EASY!! Thank heavens my mom is an old pro! Good news is- now I feel WAY more confident in sewing easier things like skirts, pillowcase dresses, etc. ha ha I am sure I will still need to take my good ole Husqvarna down to mom's every now and then for help or call her along the way. But I think I found my new hobby!!

Any advise for a beginning sewer, from you sewing experts?

  1. I am so impressed! I tried to make pajama pants one time and they were so tappered at the bottom I could barely get my foot through.

  2. I love the dress, and I am very impressed by your skills! I have yet to tackle an "Easy-to-sew for a pro" pattern, but have been taking on simpler ones I've found online. I am not an expert, but I'll give advice anyways :) I would just start working on several simple projects and practice your stitching. I've found that just making simple bags, dresses, and blankets has helped a ton in getting my stitches straight! I found the cutest pattern online for little halter shirts that turned out so cute and were super easy! I'll email it to you!

  3. That is sooooo cute! Love the material! Lola is going to look so cute in it!

I'm still gearing myself up to sew myself a church dress, perhaps once I tackle my first one we can have sewing play dates together and sew to our hearts content.

  4. Congrats! That is a big accomplishment. I would recommend looking at patterns online from bloggers. They are usually a lot easier because they have pages and pages of detailed instructions via PDF and lots of pictures. You might not even need your mom's help! You could surprise her with your skills.

  5. Very cute dress and I love the fabric. I'm a little lazy when I use patterns. I never read the instructions I just go by the pictures:)

  9. You did a great job! I am so jealous of anyone that can follow a pattern and operate a sewing machine. Learning to sew is on my list of things to do one day. Awesome job!

  10. Darnetta, It looks great! I love the fabric and the style is so cute. You'll have to post a pic of Lola in it! I am so impressed, Wow, you are a talented lady!

I made some skirts once with my mom... my advice from that is don't pick something with zippers because those things are buggers!
